Next March 2nd, a Spain-Vietnam Business Meeting will be held at the CEOE headquarters, to mark Mr. Tran Luu Quang, Deputy Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, H.E. Tran Luu Quang’s visit to Spain.

During the meeting, he will present the business and investment opportunities offered by the country, new projects and public-private cooperation initiatives in the sectors of infrastructure, rail transport, agri-food, renewable energy, environment, water, information technology, textiles and tourism, among others.

MEETING AMBASSADOR OF VIETNAM

The last 29 september, our President, Tomas Gonzalez had the pleasure of having a meeting with the Ambassador of Vietnam to Spain, H.E. Mr. Hoang Xuan Hai. During the meeting they discussed future collaborations in order to boost business activities between Vietnam and Spain.

ASEMPEA’S WEBINAR ON «EU TRADE POLICY AND FREE TRADE AGREEMENTS IN SOUTHEAST ASIA»

On July 15, the Spain Asean Business Association (ASEMPEA) held its last Webinar of the early season on «EU Trade Policy and Free Trade Agreements in Southeast Asia». On this occasion the Webinar was presented and moderated by Mr. Antonio Viñal, Secretary-General of Asempea and Director of Avco Legal, and counted on Mr. Jochen Müeller, Deputy Director of the EU Mission in Madrid, as speaker.

Mr. Müeller made a complete and exhaustive analysis of the Free Trade Agreements with Singapore -that entered into force last November 21, 2019- and Vietnam -that will enter into force next August 1-. Through these Treatises, important tariff barriers will gradually be eliminated, thus making these countries more attractive for European and Spanish companies alike.

In addition to tariff barriers, Mr. Müeller examined non-tariff barriers, industrial property rights, access to service sector, public tenders and dispute settlement systems. He concluded by saying that the next Treaty of the so-called New Generation Agreements is being negotiated with Indonesia.

This Webinar closed a first cycle of events that started with the interventions of the Ambassadors of Spain to the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia and the Ambassador of Malaysia to Spain. Next September Asempea will resume its activities in order to give a more concrete vision of the Asean countries and in particular the business opportunities they offer to Spanish companies.

Today, January 7, 2020, in our Association’s headquarters, took place a Talk-Colloquium about “CULTURE AND PROTOCOL IN THE WAY OF DOING BUSINESS IN THE ASEAN”, with the participation of Mr. Carlos Gastón, representative of BBVA in South-East Asia for more than twenty years.

The Talk focused on the Asean countries’ specific features that all companies should take into account when doing business in these countries, as well as on the business opportunities the latter offer to Spanish companies throughout this year.

Today, December 12, in our Association’s headquarters, we held a business meeting on “INCOTERMS 2020”, given by Mr. Cesar Jiménez, of Kerry Logistics.

The presentation focused on the different types of Incoterms, the main differences between the Incoterms 2010 and the new Incoterms 2020 and, finally, on how importers, exporters, logistic companies and custom companies will be affected by the latter.

Caixabank has just published the Third Edition of its Index for Business Internationalization (ICIE 2019), an Index in which this Spanish bank examines 67 countries from the perspective of five keys that in its opinion are essentials for any internationalization process, such as: accessibility, commercial attraction, financial environment and stability. Yet in this latter case, it does not point out whether this stability is either political or legal, and does not mention security, as important as stability.

According to the results of this search, if we take into consideration first the different regions, we see that Southeast Asia is fourth in the rankings, after Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Central and Western Asia and the Americas; and if we take into account afterwards the different countries, we observe that Singapore is ranked 35, Thailand 48, Malaysia 49, Indonesia 51 and Vietnam 52, between France, the United Kingdom and the United States in the first three places, and Equatorial Guinea, Angola and Sri Lanka in the last three.

It is noteworthy that the Philippines does not appear in this list, despite the important ties that this country and Spain maintain on a regular basis; and that the places of Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam are, if not at the bottom of the list, at the lower part of it. There is obviously room for these countries to improve their current ranking and at least reach India, which is in the middle of the list, given the potential of their economy, their present levels of growth and the progressive interest of Spanish companies for them.
